Due to the rapid growth of bamboo, large quantities can be harvested annually without endangering the stock. Some bamboo species grow up to 30 meters high and grow one meter per day. After just a few years, the stalks begin to lignify and can be used economically. Many bamboo species have extensive root systems from which new plants constantly regrow. Therefore, cutting down a bamboo stalk does not kill the entire plant, as is the case with trees. The rapid growth also means that bamboo can store an extremely large amount of CO2 compared to trees.
