| Microfiber is a collective term for fibers whose individual threads are finer than half the diameter of a silk fiber, finer than a third of the diameter of a cotton fiber, and finer than one hundredth of the diameter of a human hair. The base for making the cloths is usually polyester, polyamide, or polyacrylic, with a ratio of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide producing the optimal microfiber. Compared to other materials, microfiber has a significantly higher volume at the same weight. Additionally, the wedge-shaped structure of each fiber contributes to a much larger surface area than other materials. This results in cleaning cloths made of microfiber having a more optimal contact surface than conventional cleaning rags and can therefore bind more dirt.
